A BIOGRAPHY of Dame Roma Mitchell to be launched today will fuel speculation about her personal life.

Roma the First, by respected academic Susan Magarey and historian Kerrie Round, canvasses rumours surrounding South Australia's former governor and judge.

The authors examine rumours that she had relationships with three men, one of whom was "a well-known lawyer", as well as rumours that she was gay.

The authors speculate that Dame Roma was swept up in an affair during the "intense sexiness" of the late 1960s.

They say while there were many rumours of an affair, none of their sources was willing to go on the record so they have included a hypothetical story in the biography which they say is based on "oral evidence".
