Book Club: St. Martin's Press Editor Keith Kahla

To paraphrase Charles Dickens, these are the best of times and the worst of times for LGBT publishing. Characters like us are showing up in mainstream fiction in greater numbers, more books are available through national chains, and outlets such as Amazon.com and InsightOut Book Club are guiding eager readers toward great books.

At the same time, though, publishers with large LGBT lines, such as Haworth Press and Carroll and Graf, are shutting down, as are many specialty bookstores around the country. To get an insider’s view of the state of GLBT publishing today, I sat down in Denver with Keith Kahla, editor at St. Martin’s Press in New York, as we were both attending the Left Coast Crime conference for fans of mystery novels.
