The Advocate Guide to Gay Men's Health and Wellness by Frank Spinelli, MD; Alyson Books, $21.95

Do your balls hurt? Are you able to achieve and maintain an erection? Are you due for a Pap smear, colonoscopy, or STD screening?

These are the types of questions Dr. Frank Spinelli, author of a new book on gay men's health management, wants you to ask yourself. Since men in general are notorious for avoiding check-ups and physicians altogether, this volume will be a welcome addition to the reference libraries of those in medical denial.

The strikingly handsome doctor gets candid in the opening chapter, recounting his experiences in coming out to his own parents and in becoming Clinical Director of HIV services at Manhattan's Cabrini Medical Center. Nearing the pivotal age of 40, Spinelli began to ask the "what if" questions about his own longevity, health, and physical future, and just what being gay and middle-aged really means. His book hopes to answer those questions for legions of other gay men as well.
