Crime pays for Patricia Cornwell
CONCORD, Mass. — "Have you ever been in a Ferrari?"
That tempting offer comes from best-selling crime novelist Patricia Cornwell, who invites a reporter to slide into the plush leather driver's seat, put the key in the ignition and press the starter button, which brings the racing car's 480-horsepower engine roaring to life.
The bright red 2008 Spider is one of Cornwell's favorite things — along with a Bell 407 helicopter and a garage-full of Harley-Davidsons, her ride of choice.
These pricey toys are the spoils of a phenomenally successful string of novels, most revolving around popular fictional forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta. Twelve of Cornwell's books have hit No. 1 on USA TODAY's Best-Selling Books list.
The 16th Scarpetta novel, aptly named Scarpetta (Kay Scarpetta) (Putnam, $27.95), goes on sale today.
