Ken Johnson, drag queen Kandy writes a book on queer Sydney

GEORGE Clooney's aunt, singer Rosemary Clooney, was a regular in the audience and Abe Saffron ran Kings Cross when Ken Johnson first pulled on a frock and became Kandy.

In wigs and false lashes, he was one of Sydney's first drag queens even before the opening of the legendary Les Girls, of which he was a founding member.

Known as the pioneer of queer Sydney, he has now written a book, not just because he has lots of juicy stories to tell but because some of the other histories of the city's gay past are, well, a bit of a drag.
